This bed is a traditional pencil post bed with a few slight design changes.
The side bed rails are 7.5" tall to hide the box spring and are 1.75" thick to add mass and stability. The octagonal posts are 2.75" thick and taper to just over 1" at the top.
By its nature, the pencil post bed has to break down into manageable parts in order to move it into a house, up stairs and around corners. Therefore all of the joinery has to be able to come apart, yet assemble easily and solidly. This is accomplished by a headboard whose tenons float in the mortise and side rails that are tenoned and fit into the post mortises and are secured with hidden bolts.
Finally the posts are finished off with a traditional hand carved "lambs tongue" detail where the taper meets the flat part of the post.
